My college life till now

It was the month of August 2008 when the merit list for SIT admissions was out. I had filled Computer Science as my first preference, so checked out the merit list of other branches first coz I had no hope of getting CS as it was Symbiosis. I checked IT, E&TC and Mechanical and couldn’t find my name, and then I went for the CS list and my name was there (Yay). At first, I was shocked seeing my name in the list and jumped off my chair. Though it took a lot of discussions later on to join Symbi coz of the high fees and all, but I guess it was pretty much decided and so I came to SIT. I came to Pune on 20th of August 2008, reported to the college and then went for a day out to Shirdi with my mom, dad and bhai. 24th August was the day for the Orientation ceremony and here I met some more SIT guys. In the evening, I went to my hostel in Karve Nagar for setting up of my room. It was the first day of my hostel life. I was feeling a bit left out coz I was all alone now, didn’t know anyone, perhaps nobody knew anyone at that point of time. Slowly and slowly, started talking to the people and in few days I had a new bunch of friends in my college.
SEMESTER-1

We had our first outstation college visit to Kohlapur and the only one till now in the first week of Septe
mber 2008. This was the time when people actually got to know each other really well. And then our First Year engineering kick started. At that point of time, my college was just nothing more than a home with four to five rooms with a mini library which was big enough if you consider the area of it but equivalent to a study room of an IIT aspirant. I and my friends used to rush to the front row seats for the lectures to get the most out of it but as time passed by we became the back benchers. We used to concentrate on our sleep and spend our time in messaging. Mechanical Engineering class used to be the most boring class in the first semester, even a collar mike turned out to be a failure for our professor. Mathematics as usual was interesting to me coz it was one of my favourite subjects from the school time, so I often used to sit in the first row for that lecture only. Electrical engineering and Physics class used to be more on the sincere side as students actually used to listen to the teachers. And the Civil lecture, KHAUFFNAAK!!! The lecturer tried everything to scare us and so eventually had to find another job. We used to have a lot of fun in the hostel playing cards every night and cricket in the corridors, and the birthday party nights used to be the best ones. Also started to hang around with friends Rohit, Pranoy, Nafis, Abhishek and Saurabh in the famous places of Pune. We had our first intra college fest ‘The Rising’ in the month of October which went really awesome. Met Soniya and Neha during this time. My first internals went good except that I screwed up badly in my favourite subject Mathematics, but covered it up really well in the second internals. Before the final exams I had a one week long preparatory leave and went to Mumbai to meet the cousins. Group studies at SB Road with Kaveri and at hostel with everyone later at night helped a lot to cover most of the syllabus. Then we had the end-semester exams, five days five exams, last was on 30th December and my first semester was over.31st December, the next day I took a train back to Delhi with more than fifteen of my college mates and coincidently we all were in the same coach. Met Tanya and Jayati for the first time, two famous personalities of the college at that time. Fifteen SITians in a coach, only God could help the other passengers now. That was my first New Year celebration in a train, we woke everyone up at 12 AM to wish Happy New Year, and it was so much fun.
SEMESTER-2
I reported back to college on 15th of January 2009 for the second semester. We had Mathematics-II, Applied Sciences-II, Mechanics, Electronics and Graphics as the main subjects. I celebrated my birthday on 13th February in McDonalds with few of my friends. The next big thing for me was the Semester one results. Got a 3.74 GPA on a scale of 4 and I was speechless. I was in total shoc
k at that moment and the only thought hovering my mind was, “yaar ye teri marksheet nhi ho sakti. Printing mistake hogi” (lol). But it was mine and I was on cloud nine after realising that. Now it was my turn to treat my friends, gave a small party to some of the hostel mates and on 20th March a big party for all my good friends, guys and gals at Kamath restaurant. The party went nice, though some of my uninvited hostel guys tried a lot to ruin it by coming to the same restaurant. We had awesome fun during the Rang Mahotsav, probably the first time we thought we are in a college. I can never forget me painted with Asian paints and it took a lot of kerosene to get it removed, though there was nothing that could save my clothes I was wearing that day. Had a lot of outings with these guys and Neeru, Sanya and Priyanka. We also celebrated Sachin Tendulkar’s birthday, thanks to one of my friends Pranoy and probably the biggest fan of him I have met. Made friends with Dharna ‘the crazy F.R.I.E.N.D.S. fan’ and Purva a nice decent gal from my division only. Went back home for the 20 days long preparatory leave before the end-sems. Came back after two weeks and realised I had enjoyed a lot and its high time to study now. I and Jayati used to study daily in front of the Auditorium and sometimes in the Food Court. Exams went nice and so did the result, me getting 3.83 GPA this time.
SEMESTER-3

Semester three was the actual start of the computer related subjects. Entered a new set of students, the 2009 batch and within just a few days, our college was not only ours. Had intros with the new guys and gals. The college had o
rganised a freshers for them. It was kinda weird when juniors used to approach me n ask “Bhaiya, iske liye kaunsi book padun?”, “Paper kaise bante h yahan?”, etc. Coz it was only the batch 2008 till now without any seniors, so we had absolutely no guidance. But now we were the seniors. This sem was very light, with just four main subjects, Discrete Structures, OOPS, EDD and Data Structures. Most of the time, we used to sit near the college stairs for using the newly installd wifi in our campus. Had a lot of outings with friends in this sem as I was fully VELLA!!! Lots and lots of birthday parties. The best time part was the IEEE JMI trip with RJ, Neha and Jayati where we went to Delhi for a paper presentation. We left for Delhi on 2nd October 2009 and had taken a twenty days night-out from the college and came back after the Diwali. I came back and left for Mumbai for a robotics workshop with Dharna, Jayati, RJ, Neha Gujar, Aishu. We surely went for the two day workshop, but later it turned out to be a trip just for fun coz we could hardly get anything in the MATLAB workshop. This sem was more of fun rather than studies.
SEMESTER-4
Now after the sem break, it was time for the fourth one, probably a harder one with six main subjects. Had an awesome time in Mahabaleshwar with Pranoy, Rohit, Saurabh and Nafis. Had an amazing boat ride and Strawberry wid cream(Mahabaleshwar's special),wish there was an outlet in Pune also. Met Chitrangda and we have really become great friends
now. She is always with me whenever I am low. Had a lot of plans for my birthday this time but all I could do was just giving a dinner to all my friends, that too in a hurry due to the college bus timings. Well on this birthday something happened, but it was bigger, the German Bakery blast and everyone started getting phone calls from home. I have celebrated last two of my birthdays in Pune and none of them went the way I had planned. Hope the next one’s good. On 24th February went to Lavasa with Soniya, Neha, Dharna, Jayati, Purva, Tanya and Prashant. The day went awesome especially the boat ride with the DJ on, roaming in the nature trail and finally the sunset and lake view from Ekaant Retreat which we later came to know is the best sunset point of Lavasa. Probably had the best moments and clicks there, 400 pics in just 4-5 hours being a proof for that. We had our college’s first ever Cultural fest this sem ‘Reverb’. Though we couldn’t get more outsiders but still those three days were awesome coz firstly there were no lectures, i.e. officially off which is very rare in SIT and secondly ‘the golas we had in d fest’. We also had the sports fest and I got my first SIT award for Table Tennis mixed doubles runners up with Tanya. We used to have a special evening lecture for ‘Computer Organisation’. One who has attended this lecture is surely gonna remember it forever. It was a lecture in which we made notebooks but used it for the rough work later on, where most of the time passed in making and throwing air planes and paper balls and if nothing interesting going on, just plug in your headphones and even after knowing everything all our professor did was NOTHING. I haven’t seen a more patient teacher than our evening professor. End semester exams were ok, but screwed up two of them very badly and it did reflect in my mark sheet.

The fifth semester has kick started really well and it is also the time to think about the future now. It’s been more than two years now here in Pune and these two years just seem a bit more than two months. I am a fifty percent engineer now. I have been homesick sometimes probably coz m very far from my hometown Hardwar. But in these two years I have enjoyed a lot, seen a different life, a different environment to live in, all types of people around and m surely gonna maximize the enjoyment in the next two also. There have been bad times also, but one has to get over those for the betterment.
Looking forward to all the fun for the next two years also. M surely gonna miss u guyz later on.. :)

If robots become equivalent to humans?

The rate at which we are moving in terms of technology, there may be a possibility that in the next fifteen to twenty years, you may see robots equipped with thinking and emotional intelligence. It has both a positive side to it as well as a negative. We are the ones making everything possible. The technology that exists today was just an imagination ten years back.

When it comes to robots, technologically we are progressing at a lightning rate. The positive is that it is for our own ease, but the concern is that are we moving so fast that we are imagining developing something which can dominate the species who created them? If a machine can be equipped with these capabilities, then humans would be just a waste on this Earth. Humans need the basic amenities to survive while all that robots need is just a source of an electrical power. Will the requirements of humans start declining after that? Will we be the slaves to our own creation?
Thinking at first, robots with thinking and emotional power one would say ‘Definitely not possible’. How can one program decision making power and emotions? But you never know what next is coming. We might witness a different world in the years to come. All we can do is just wait and watch.
